What things cost

What is the HVAC diagnostic fee?

Florida sources commonly cite $75–$200 for a diagnostic or service-call fee, with some putting Florida contractors at $65–$95. It is frequently waived or credited toward the repair if the work goes ahead. Researched market estimates, not quoted rates.

What a diagnostic costs

These are researched market estimates, not a quote

Every money figure on this page is a published third-party range, compiled in September 2026 from the pricing guides listed in the sources at the foot of the page. They are here so you can sanity-check what a contractor offers you before you sign, not so you can hold anyone to a number they did not write. The one exception is the City of Longwood permit fee, which is the City's own published figure and is linked to its fee schedule.

What you are paying for

Diagnosis is the part that prevents the repeat visit

The fee buys time and equipment, not a part. A technician has to establish what has failed before quoting — and on this housing stock the visible symptom is regularly not the fault. A capacitor replaced on a system that is starved for return air, or with a condenser coil packed with oak litter, fails again in weeks. The diagnostic is what stops that.

Two questions to ask before anyone is dispatched, and they are the same two questions whoever you call: what is the fee, and is it credited against the repair if I proceed? A contractor who will not answer either on the phone is telling you something.

After-hours and weekend rates are usually higher. If the house is habitable, a Monday morning appointment is genuinely cheaper than a Saturday night one.

Reading the invoice

A repair has no permit line

One Longwood-specific check on the invoice. A diagnostic and a parts repair carry no building permit — the City's adopted Chapter 1 amendments exempt the “replacement of any part that does not alter its approval or make it unsafe.” A permit line on a repair invoice means equipment is being replaced, at $246.61 for a residential change-out inside the city. That is not wrong, but it is a different job from the one you booked, and you should be told so. The exempt list.
