What a capacitor should cost
These are researched market estimates, not a quote
Every money figure on this page is a published third-party range, compiled in September 2026 from the pricing guides listed in the sources at the foot of the page. They are here so you can sanity-check what a contractor offers you before you sign, not so you can hold anyone to a number they did not write. The one exception is the City of Longwood permit fee, which is the City's own published figure and is linked to its fee schedule.
| What is being priced | Researched range | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Run capacitor, installed | $80–$400 | Installed, nationally, averaging around $175. Florida-specific sources cite $85–$200 for a job that takes under half an hour. |
| Diagnostic, if charged separately | $75–$200 | Commonly cited Florida diagnostic or service-call fee. Some sources put Florida contractors at $65–$95, and the fee is frequently waived or credited toward the repair if the work proceeds. |
Why the range is so wide
A $20 part inside a $200 visit
The part itself is inexpensive. Published breakdowns put the component at roughly $8–$45 with labour at $60–$150 an hour, which is why the spread between the bottom and the top of the installed range is almost entirely labour, call-out policy and how the diagnostic is treated. Ask two questions before anyone drives out: what the diagnostic fee is, and whether it is credited against the repair. What the diagnostic fee actually covers.
Capacitor failure is a heat-and-storms problem, which is why Florida sources single it out. The capacitor sits in the condenser cabinet outdoors, it works every start cycle in a climate that logs roughly 3,452 cooling degree days a year at the nearest long-record station, and Central Florida's lightning frequency does the rest.
A local check on the invoice
No permit for a capacitor — and what a repeat failure means
A capacitor replacement does not need a City of Longwood permit, and the reason is worth knowing because it is the same rule that decides a changeout does. Longwood's own Chapter 1 amendments, adopted by Ordinance No. 21-2196, exempt the “replacement of any part that does not alter its approval or make it unsafe.” A capacitor is such a part. A condenser is not. So a genuine capacitor job should carry no permit line at all — if one appears, ask what else is being replaced. The full exempt list.
The other thing worth knowing: a capacitor that fails twice in two seasons is usually not a capacitor problem. On the housing stock here the underlying cause is normally a condenser coil packed with oak litter or a system running against restricted return air, both of which raise head pressure and cook the capacitor. Replacing it again without cleaning the coil is a subscription, not a repair.

A capacitor call should be short
If it is not, something else is wrong with the system and you should be told what, in writing, before the second visit.
