Costs
AC repair cost in Longwood, FL
Florida AC repairs typically run $150–$650 once parts and labour are counted, on top of a $75–$200 diagnostic that is often credited if you proceed. A capacitor is $80–$400; a compressor is $1,500–$3,500 and is really a replace-or-not decision. Researched third-party ranges.

What the guides say a repair costs
These are researched market estimates, not a quote
Every money figure on this page is a published third-party range, compiled in September 2026 from the pricing guides listed in the sources at the foot of the page. They are here so you can sanity-check what a contractor offers you before you sign, not so you can hold anyone to a number they did not write. The one exception is the City of Longwood permit fee, which is the City's own published figure and is linked to its fee schedule.
| What is being priced | Researched range | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic / service call | $75–$200 | Commonly cited Florida diagnostic or service-call fee. Some sources put Florida contractors at $65–$95, and the fee is frequently waived or credited toward the repair if the work proceeds. |
| General Florida repair band | $150–$650 | The general Florida AC repair band once a part and labour are involved, diagnostic included. |
| Run capacitor | $80–$400 | Installed, nationally, averaging around $175. Florida-specific sources cite $85–$200 for a job that takes under half an hour. |
| Compressor | $1,500–$3,500 | Residential unit out of warranty. Quoted averages fall between $1,550 and $2,800, with an outer range of $1,100–$4,650 installed once refrigerant recovery and recharge are counted. |
Ranked by how often it's the cause
What actually breaks on Longwood's 1970s and 80s stock
The failures reported most often in Longwood are not random. They follow the housing stock and the tree canopy:
- Run capacitor. The most common single AC repair in Florida, and the sources agree it is a heat and lightning-frequency problem rather than a brand problem. What a capacitor should cost.
- Condenser coil fouled with leaf litter and pollen. Longwood and the Wekiva-area subdivisions sit under mature oak and pine. A coil that is shaded is also a coil that is loaded, and a loaded coil raises head pressure until something else fails.
- Frozen evaporator from restricted return air. A 1970s floor plan with one central return grille was not sized for a modern blower. Add a dirty filter and the coil ices.
- Condensate drain blockage. With an attic air handler this is the failure that costs more in ceiling than in parts.
- Contactor and control faults. Cheap parts, and the reason a diagnostic before a quote is not an upsell.
- Refrigerant leak. On an R-410A system this is where the repair-or-replace conversation actually starts. Why R-410A changes the arithmetic.
Where the line falls
When a repair stops being a repair
Longwood’s own building code amendments draw the line between a repair and a changeout more clearly than most cities do. Ordinance No. 21-2196 exempts from permitting the “replacement of any part that does not alter its approval or make it unsafe.” A capacitor is a part. A contactor is a part. A condenser is not — swapping it alters the approved equipment, so it needs a mechanical permit and the $246.61 fee. That is a useful test for a homeowner reading a quote: if the work needs a permit, it is not a repair. The eight exempt items, in full.
Florida's CS/CS/HB 803 (2026), effective 1 July 2026, requires local governments to exempt single-family work valued under $7,500 from permitting. It does not help here. The exemption expressly excludes “any electrical, plumbing, structural, mechanical, or gas work performed on property containing a single-family dwelling,” and it does not apply in a flood hazard area either. An air conditioning changeout is mechanical work, so it stays permitted at any dollar value, in Longwood and everywhere else in Florida.
Before you approve the repair
The two checks worth doing
Two arithmetic checks, both of which you can do without a technician in the room. First, a repair that costs more than about a third of a replacement on a system past its tenth summer is usually money spent twice. Longwood's median build year is 1979 and 66.5% of its parcels date from 1970–89, so most houses here are on their third or fourth system and the equipment being repaired is rarely young. Second, if the system is R-410A and the fault is a leak or a compressor, price the changeout beside the repair before you decide. Repair or replace, worked through.

Get the fault found before a part gets replaced
Replacing a capacitor on a system that is starved for return air just buys a few weeks. Longwood's floor plans make that a common story, so we find the fault first.
